Mirror, Mirror: A fun activity to do at home for babies

Baby with a mirror

Babies are naturally drawn to faces, and their own reflection is no exception! Using a mirror during tummy time can help keep them engaged while supporting their physical and cognitive development.

How to Set Up the Activity

Create a Comfortable Space

  • Lay a soft mat or blanket on the floor.
  • Place a large, flat plastic mirror securely in front of your baby.

Encourage Tummy Time

  • Gently place your baby on their tummy so they can see their reflection.
  • Talk to them as they look at the mirror—smile, make faces, and describe what they see.

Let Them Explore

  • Your baby may reach out to touch the “other baby” in the mirror.
  • If they babble or giggle, respond to keep them engaged.

Adjust as Needed

  • If your baby shows signs of discomfort or frustration, give them a break.
  • Start with short sessions and build up their tummy time gradually.

What Your Baby is Learning

  • Strengthens Muscles – Helps build neck, core, and arm strength for crawling.Encourages
  • Visual Tracking – Supports early eye development and focus.
  • Promotes Self-Discovery – Introduces babies to their own face and movements.
  • Boosts Communication – Engages babies in early social interactions.

Ways to Extend the Activity

  • Add Interesting Objects – Place soft toys or high-contrast items (black and white patterns) near the mirror to grab their attention.
  • Introduce Sensory Play – Tape zip-sealed sensory bags (filled with rice, fabric, or water beads) to the floor next to the mirror for extra exploration.
  • Experiment with Light & Reflection – Try angling the mirror slightly or using a small, safe light source to create reflections for them to follow.
  • Encourage Movement – Hold a toy in the mirror’s reflection and move it to encourage reaching.

Questions to Engage Your Baby

  • “Who’s that in the mirror?”
  • “Can you touch the baby’s nose?”
  • “Can you wave to yourself?”

Safety First

  • Always supervise—never leave your baby alone with a mirror.
  • Use a shatterproof mirror designed for babies.
  • Ensure a safe play area with no sharp edges or loose parts.
  • Watch for signs of overstimulation and adjust the activity as needed.
