Children get excited about learning to write when they use mark making and writing for a purpose.
They can see that writing is a tool they can use in their daily lives. This gives their writing meaning and shows them how useful and practical writing can be.
It motivates them to experiment with letters, words, and sentences, while also helping them develop important skills like fine motor coordination, language development, and problem-solving. By embedding writing into meaningful activities, you’re not only helping your child improve their writing but also showing them that writing is a powerful tool they can use to communicate, create, and solve problems.
Involve your child in marking special events on the family calendar. For example, if your child receives an invitation to a party, let them make a mark on the correct date of the calendar by drawing a picture, writing the first letter of their name or their whole name.
Think of other special events to mark in the calendar such as adding holidays or clubs. Can your child think of a picture or symbol to help describe this event, such as drawing a ball for football practise or an aeroplane for holidays?
