Giving children a special job to do provides them with a sense of purpose and helps them develop important skills such as responsibility, teamwork, problem-solving, and confidence. Whether it’s helping set the table, taking care of a pet or going to the shops, children learn that their contributions matter and that they can be trusted with important tasks. Over time, these experiences help them develop into capable, independent individuals who understand the value of hard work and responsibility. Plus, involving children in family tasks can be a wonderful bonding experience and a way to create lasting memories while teaching valuable life skills.

Off to the Shops Activity

Involve your child in planning your next trip to the shops. Discuss what you are planning to buy and model writing a shopping list. Encourage your child to write their own list, by drawing pictures or writing or copying letters and words that you have written or from food packaging. You can circle the key words to make this easier.

Off to the Shops Variation

Bring the list and a pencil to the supermarket. Encourage your child to go down the list and remind you of the items, select the items off the shelf and then tick or cross off the items as you put them in the trolley.
